They are located in the Andes Mountain Range at an altitude of 4,321 m.a.s.l., and the greatest activity takes place between 06:30 and 09:00 a.m., when atmospheric pressure generates huge steam columns that spring from the ground, producing a contrast between the mountains and the deep blue sky. On the way back we will pass along Machuca, an Atacama village which main activities are shepherding and will show its marsh, ducks and andean sea gulls.

After visiting the Tatio Geysers, we go to Puritama Hot Springs, located at 3,500 m.a.s.l. and 30 km from San Pedro de Atacama.They are thermal waters that flow at 25 - 30°C (77 - 86° F) and bathe a deep rocky area forming stepped pools. Various minerals that have curative properties for rheumatism arise from Puritama river, and they are also useful for therapeutic baths. Itinerary

Leaving the Tatio geothermic fields, we go to Caspana a village located at 3,260 m.a.s.l. This fertile valley is emphasized for its stone architecture with mud-and-straw roofs. One of its characteristics is the irrigation system through terraces that originated from the Incas time. Then, we go to Chiu Chiu, a village that dates back to more than 1000 years BC, is located at 2,525 m.a.s.l. and 30 km east of Calama. The first church in Chile was built in Chiu Chiu in 1611 and was rebuilt in 1675. Finally, we arrive to Lasana, a beautiful valley located at 2,590 m.a.s.l. and 40 km east of Calama, characterized by its petroglyphs and its impressive pukara (fortress), which construction started the year 400 A.C. Ending at Calama airport or return to San Pedro de Atacama.

Only 19 kms from San Pedro de Atacama is the Moon Valley, which has been designated Nature Sanctuary and is formed by a depression surrounded by small hills with impressive sharp ridges. The tour starts at the Lookout, which provides a spectacular panoramic view of the surroundings. We continue on route towards Valle de La Muerte, where we will see Tres Marias, Las Cavernas de Sal and Duna Mayor. Tres Marias are geological formations caused by successive foldings of the earth's crust. In the Cavernas de Sal we can see pieces of salt gem precious crystal of transparent, produced under high pressure in the dry environment. Going east we reach to Duna Mayor, where we can admire the sunset.

Toconao • Atacama Salt Flat in Chaxa Lagoon
Toconao, a fresh water oasis located 38 km from San Pedro de Atacama, is characterized by its liparite stone architecture, with its church (1744) and the Campanario of San Lucas (San Lucas Belfry) (1750), the village's symbol.
The Atacama Salt Flat, located at 2,305 m.a.s.l., covers an area of 320,000 ha (790,000 acres). This large salt lake contains some small blue, turquoise, pink and gray salty ponds that are crossed by streams that spring to the surface. East of the salar is Soncor, a system of lagoons and swamps among which Laguna Chaxa, a shallow pond, stands out. Here it is possible to find flamingos among other kinds of birds. The view of the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos at sunset is a scene of unequaled beauty, with the colors of the sky reflected in the water and the outline of the flamingos forming a wonderful postcard.

Leaving the salt flat we go to the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, located at 4,100 m.a.s.l. This place is part of the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos and is administered by the native community of Socaire. The eruption of the Miñiques volcano about one million years ago caused the damming of the water that used to flow to the salt flat, giving origin to these altiplano lagoons with blue water and white shores. The finding of earthenware and arrowheads confirm the occupation of this place between 4,000 and 3,000 years BC.
On the way back to San Pedro de Atacama we pass along Socaire, a village of pre-Columbian origin, known nowadays for its typical Atacaman food. It is the last Atacaman village before crossing to Argentina.

Located 10 km from San Pedro de Atacama, the village of Tulor is the oldest vestige of an inhabited place in the Atacama Salt Flat (it dates back to between 800 BC and 500 AC), incredibly well preserved, with an architecture of circular mud structures. At present 10% of the village has been uncovered by excavations made in 1982. There is a walkway, a lookout and a museum.
On the way back to San Pedro de Atacama we go through the Ayllu (community) of Coyo, surrounded by plantations and hedges of brea, a thorny bush that grows in the salt flat. The tour ends in the Pukara of Quitor, an impressive structure of the twelfth century formed by volumes built with large rocks alternating with smaller ones. In the center there is a semicircular building like a tower.

Near the frontier Chile Argentina are found Pacana Monks, impressive geological formation such as huge pillar of stone similar to giant Monks who take care of the place.They are rocky structures like columns that were preserved from geological times as testimony of volcanic events occurred during the Tertiary. When crossing the river we discover the Pukara de Lasana , a 12 th Century fortress, very well preserved with more that 100 buildings with defensive walls made on stone and located over a cliff. This fortress used to be house of the heads of the Incas and the Incas in charge of the administration. We continue our trip to the Caspana a small village where you can find terrace plantation and Incaic architecture that show all the native tradition and that is located at 84 kms from Calama and at 3.305 m.a.s.l. 10:00: Visita to San Pedro de Atacama one of the main centres of the Atacameña cultura, located on the mouth of one of the rivers that feed the Salar. We visit the Padre Le Paige Archeological Museum in San Pedro where you can see and appreciate a big collection of the Atacameña Culture. We also visit its stone plaza with its old peppers trees and its church that is one of the biggest in the area. Lunch at a Local Restaurant . 15:00 Visit the Pukara de Quitor a 12 th Century (pre-Inca) fortress, located at 3 KM de San Pedro with 2.5 acre is strategically and was easily defended on all sides, until the Spanish arrival with the advantage of horses. Partially restored in 1992, the Pukara de Quitor is one of the most complete and impressive of these early defensive measures.
16:30 Visit to the Moon Valley: A place with beautiful shapes and colors where we can walk and enjoy a great geological spectacle that has been repeatedly compared with the surface of the moon, with its angular geology and rocks sculpted by millenniums of erosion. Visit the three Marias, the abandoned salt mine and the salt caverns before climbing the mayor sand dune where we can marvel at the kaleidoscope of colors that appear over the Andes at sunset. On route we will visit the Chacabuco Ex-Nitrate town , which is one of the most important and that only work until 1940. Baquedano is a small enclosure town with only one main entrance door that used to have equipment for more that 7.000 people. Its machines were take away and its houses are on regular shape. We leave this town behind to visit the Baquedano Railway Station Museum, where is possible to see some machines from the ex train, six old steam locomotives made in America and Germany, a number of cars from diferents times and countries. Departure from a Hotel in San Pedro, moving by the pavimented road for 12 kms. We go deep in a road with not signs to Piedra de la Coca, great pile of stones surrounded by zoomorphic petroglyphs. We continue to Rio Salado where we will see at the side of the river, petroglyphs from tiwanaku and inka periods. Walk around the area with a brief explanation. We will return by the same acces and we will lead on to Tambores Ravine, place where we can appreciate petroglyphs and we will cover litic quarrys. Return to San Pedro. Along natives routes, the precolumbian explorers left valuable rupestrian information thai in our times are still a mistery. EXCURSION TO YERBAS BUENAS PETROGLYPHS

Departure to Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, moving by a pavimented road, we cross Llano de la Paciencia, ascending to Cordillera de Domeyko, to take a dusty road, where we Hill be able to apréciate guanacos, cactus and plants as rica-rica (aromatic herbs), then we hill walk to rocky formations where we Hill stop to apréciate a great amount of petroglyphs with zoomorphic and antropomorphic beautiful designs where we can observe camelids, foxes and llama caravans where we will stop for a brief explanation.

08:00 Departure from the village riding suitable horses for nice and relaxed stroll, where we can enjoy some indescribable natural beauties. We will visit the Quitor Pukara, dated XII century, important defensive fortress of the Atacama culture, located at 3 kms from San Pedro de Atacama. This place it has a surface of 2.5 acres and a strategic location, defended by a impenetrable cliff upon the river, a narrow ravine and a wall at it most accessible part towards the valley. It is an impressive edification climbing a steep hill. Houses and walls were built with a mix of stones and earth plaster. We keep going to the Death Valley, going to the top of the cliff that dominates the Catarpe Valley, where we will have a spectacular panoramic view, surrounded by peaks with different wavy shapes, at the back the Andes Cordillera and to the other side, the Atacama Salt Flat. Once we arrive at the highest point, we take a detour to the Death Valley, also know as Mars Valley, where we experience one of the most desolated and arid landscape on the earth, hence the name Death Valley. Return to San Pedro de Atacama.

Along the route we will pass through an area of Petroglyphs in a rocky sector called Yerbas Buenas, here we stop to admire the different type of Petrogyphs, animal and human figures panels illustrates ancestral beliefs, data of about 4.000 years.
